COURSE 1: TACTICAL RAPPELLING COURSE
Location
RTG HQ - SUVA, FIJI
When
- 15th - 16th August 2025
Russ Tactics Group – Tactical Rappelling Course (Brief Summary)
This intensive entry‑level course builds safe, professional rappelling skills for security and response teams. Students begin with essential rope craft and knots (figure‑8 family, bowline variants, prusik/friction hitches) and an equipment rundown covering ropes, webbing, carabiners, helmets, gloves, anchor hardware, and inspection/retirement criteria. We emphasize safety protocols—edge discipline, redundancy, communications, and anchor building with load/weight‑ratio calculations and safety factors.
Learners progress through rappelling techniques (seat, Australian/forward‑face, low‑visibility approaches), belay methods (passive/active, top/bottom belay, fireman’s belay), and controlled lowers. The course includes hands‑on use of multiple descent devices such as the Figure‑8, Clutch, and Petzl devices—along with device setup, lock‑off procedures, and changeovers. Students also practice improvised solutions, including tying and donning expedient harnesses (rope and webbing), carabiner/munter rappels, and rope‑only body belays (for emergency use). Final evolutions integrate scenario-based reps: equipment checks, anchor selection, edge transitions, mid‑rope corrections, and team belay/backup roles.
By completion, students can select appropriate equipment, tie critical knots, calculate and build safe anchors, rig and execute rappels on approved devices, and employ improvised methods when required—meeting RTG safety standards and operational SOPs.
